August 6, 2022 – Slinger, WI – Hildegard Schoenauer achieved the title of centenarian when she turned 100 years in June of 2022. A native of Speyer, Germany, Schoenauer came to the U.S. in 1951 when she was 29 years old.
Born in a hospital in Germany in 1922, Schoenauer had two brothers and a sister.
During a recent conversation at her home at Serenity Villa in Slinger, Schoenauer spoke about long drives on a Sunday afternoon with her family from Frankfurt to Italy.
Schoenauer reminisced about dancing the Waltz and swimming in her youth. She said her favorite food is pork chops, creamed spinach and potatoes. “We cut up onions and it was delicious,” she said.
Schoenauer spent most of her life since 1951 at home in Chicago.
Schoenauer returned to Vienna, Austria with her niece in 1959 when she went back home for a vacation. During that time, she met her future husband Rudy, and they married shortly thereafter. At age 38 she had one son, James, who currently lives in West Bend, WI.
According to her daughter-in-law, Schoenauer worked as a hostess and later for United Airlines out of Midway Airport.
