March 26, 2022 – Slinger, WI – All four Slinger School Board candidates for the April 5, 2022 election agree that pursuing excellence in our district is the right focus. The difference lies in the philosophy that defines the role of school board members in that pursuit.
Today’s school board member must lead rather than manage. Both managers and leaders work on budgets, curriculum, facilities, etc., but leaders go to the heart of what parents and other voters are really concerned about. People ask me much more about the state of the educational system in Slinger compared to budgets and achievement. Voters now expect accountability for the content in the classroom AND its delivery.
We need leaders who refuse the status quo. The status quo of the National Education Association (NEA) and Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC) leads to awful ends: lower performance, less patriotism, hate for capitalism, divisiveness, “equity,”
indoctrination into socialism, programs like “BLM@School” and the 1619 Project, identity
before education, and the lie of systemic racism.
Our district deserves leaders on its board who move beyond the status quo, taking bold steps to promote long-term excellence. That’s why, as a parent, I submitted a policy prohibiting race and sex stereotyping in Slinger schools following the February board meeting – eight months after I publicly requested it. Identity should not be the lens through which learning is presented. Parents, students, and teachers deserve strong
leaders who are willing to fight battles before the enemy reaches the gates. Bill Brewer is
that leader.
Leaders drive results. We all know that agendas are an unfortunate reality in education.
Leaders do their homework to clarify the requirements imposed by government or grantors.
ESSER III, the latest round of federal COVID funding, openly promotes establishing equity in schools and presents it in the context of requirements.
I showed this to our board, who was unaware, and pushed for more clarification. Administration then asked more questions and ensured these directions aren’t required (confirmation pending). We never would have reached that point, however, without asking the question. Leaders drive results.
The establishment wants our schools to ignore basic truths of life, like the reality of gender. The school’s role is to teach biology and human development with appropriate timing and accuracy, leaving morality to be taught at home. For most students, home is the “safest space” of all; educators are uniquely positioned to reinforce the parent’s preeminent role here. School boards need to ensure that we’re continually teaching facts and truth to clarify reality and provide a foundation for critical thinking and life-long learning.
The ongoing work of the board is first and foremost to serve the voters and build a future that goes beyond buildings and budgets. Times have changed. Our awareness has heightened to the crazy, subtle influences that seek to devastate our students. School board members have to be up to the task; I am.
If you believe my message and that I’m the right leader, then please consider casting only one vote for Slinger School Board on Tuesday, April 5, 2022. Send the message that you
want a school board that will get this done. Vote Bill Brewer on April 5.
Bill Brewer
