November 2, 2021 – West Bend, Wi – The contractors who pulled down the West Bend Brewery were working Saturday, this time to demolish a portion of the old bath house at Regner Park.
The bath house dates to the 1930s. In a video of a photo from the 1960s Judge Andrew Gonring spotted open dressing rooms at the park’s bath house.
A bit of history on Regner Park: The warming house at Regner Park is the original bathhouse built in the 1930s during an era when President Franklin D. Roosevelt backed programs like the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Work Projects Administration. The efforts were designed to create jobs to pull the country out of the Great Depression. The WPA developed projects to improve city streets, playgrounds, bridges and public buildings. Regner Park opened in 1935.
Neighbors remember the changing rooms, kids working behind the counter and the steel baskets where you checked your stuff, popular swimming passes and tags, the east end of the pond that was roped off where the frogs lived, the high dive and the guy listed on the police report who would steal women’s shoes.
