Washington County, WI – Fond du Lac County Deputy District Attorney Barry Braatz announced his candidacy for Washington County District Attorney.
It was earlier this month when Washington County District Attorney Mark Bensen announced he would not seek re-election. Bensen has been in the Washington County district attorney’s office since 2021. He was initially named deputy district attorney in 2009 when then District Attorney Todd Martens was named to the circuit court bench by Governor Jim Doyle.

Braatz is a career prosecutor, and former Washington County legal intern. Over his career he has prosecuted homicides, sexual assaults, drug trafficking, OWIs, and domestic violence.
“I’ve spent my entire career working to ensure the safety of my family and the families of the communities I serve. I commit to the people of Washington County that I will work side by-side with law enforcement to hold criminals accountable, support crime victims, and provide safe neighborhoods for all who call Washington County home.”
Braatz grew up on a dairy farm and attended Campbellsport High School, Marian University and Marquette University Law School. He and his wife, Olivia, have one daughter, and one on the way.
Braatz is the second candidate to throw his hat in the ring. Earlier this month Washington County Assistant DA Mandy Shepper announced her candidacy.
