Algebra students at Ozaukee Christian School explain tithing | By Kris Austin

West Bend, WI – As Christians, God expects us to walk closely with Christ in every aspect of life. With this in mind, Ozaukee Christian School, 1214 Hwy. 33, West Bend, WI, uses the Bible as the foundation for every class. God created the principles that make math possible, and sometimes students can learn a math lesson straight from scripture.

As Kris Austin’s algebra students finished the school year by learning to calculate percentages, she took the opportunity to teach tithing. Based on the translation of the Hebrew word for tithing, a tithe is generally understood to be 10 percent, which the students can now easily calculate.

“We are called to provide for those who cannot always provide for themselves,” wrote Kiera, an algebra student, in her essay for the class.

Jesse, another student, was moved by the parable of the widow’s offering from Mark 12. “No money is more important than your relationship and respect for God. … Although it may not be easy, giving money is something all of us can do.”

Keeping everything in perspective, an algebra student named Leah wrote, “Tithing is a good practice to have, but you do not need to tithe to be saved from your sins. … Romans 10:9 says, ‘That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.’”
