July 3, 2019 – Washington Co., WI – While farmers across Washington County are working on corn and soybeans this season there seems to be a bumper crop of maple seeds….everywhere.
The helicopters have taken wing and can be found collecting in rain gutters at homes in Slinger, Hartford, West Bend and Kewaskum.
According to the Farmers’ Almanac: An over-abundance of samaras ( the technical term for the winged seed) sometimes means the tree experienced some sort of “stress” the previous year, so producing a bumper crop of seeds is the tree’s way of carrying on the species, should that stress continue and that particular tree not survive.
