Young schoolteacher, Leon Tolchinsky is about to begin his first assignment in a remote Russian hamlet. When he arrives, he finds people sweeping dust from their stoops back into their houses and milking cows upside down to get more cream.
Leon soon learns that the village is cursed with stupidity and that he too, will fall under the curse if he stays there more than 24 hours. But, he has fallen in love with Sophia – a girl so stupid that she has only recently learned how to sit down!
Will Leon find a way to break the curse or will he become another fool in love?
