A love story in Barton: Helping promote Paws in the Park

Hank pulled up in front of Over the Moon on Barton Avenue and put the old pickup truck in idle and waited patiently for Essie.

The pair were asked to help promote the Washington County Humane Society’s Paws in the Park, which is set for Sept. 10 in Jackson. Hank reached over and scratched Bart behind the ears.

He always felt a kinship with animals and was pleased Essie did too.

Pretty soon Essie burst out the door of the store and in one leap she cleared the stairs and was tugging at the door of the pickup. “Nudge over Bart,” she said playfully as she hopped in the passenger seat.

“Did you get the cat litter,” she asked.

“Right in back,” said Hank as he looked out the window and pulled into traffic.

The pickup lurched and careened up the road.  Bart jumped into Essie’s lap and pushed his face out the open window – his long ears flapping in the breeze.

The pair pulled into the driveway of the Humane Society and Bart beat them both to the front door. After making a donation of cat litter at the front desk Hank, Essie and Bart decided to take a look at some of the animals awaiting adoption; Bart was particularly excited to sniff out some new friends.

As the setup for the photo shoot was underway Marnie Brown, executive director of the WCHS gave Hank and Essie a primer on Paws in the Park.

“The walk will step off Saturday, Sept. 10 at 9 a.m.,” she said. “There are two courses including a 1.5-mile or 2.5-mile walk; each will begin in Jackson Park in Jackson.”

Brown filled them in on some of the particulars including all walkers will leave at the same time,  water for the animals and their companions will be provided along the route, and after the walk participants who brought in the most pledges will be recognized.

“This really is a great day for the Humane Society,” said Brown. “It’s our largest fundraiser, all money raised goes to caring for the animals and people really have a great time.”
