It was the 4th annual Barton Day and organizers were wondering why the day started so gloomy. Essie and Hank pitched in and raced to set up the tents and food stands. It wasn’t until a little after noon the sun broke through the clouds and brought forth a beautiful day in Barton.
Essie left her perch to check out some of the festivities…
She admired the collector cars from Kirchhagn Cruisers car club and found Manders at
Maverick Tattoo putting her artistic talents to work at the face painting booth.
Jeff Slais from Wisconsin House Woodworks drew a crowd with his history display of Barton. He had a table full of items including an old Barton baseball uniform and team trophy from 1946
Vendors were doing a booming business including All in Books and Laughing Mountain popcorn.
Some superheroes were spotted on Monroe Street along with the Dynamic Duo, Rev. Justin Lopina and Rev. Nathan Reesman.
The folks at the food tent were cooking up a storm and dishing out orders of hamburgers, hot dogs and Schwai’s brats.
Shops along Barton Avenue including
Over the Moon saw their fare share of traffic as neighbors and out-of-towners took home a bit of local history.
Discovering Mary’s garden
Essie was in a panic but she knew she couldn’t let on. There were too many people counting on her for Barton Day but sadly …. she couldn’t figure out where grandma was going each day.
The rain hindered the start of Barton Day but folks made due. The weather would pass… and Essie climbed the platform as she posed with Hank to try and drum up publicity for much-needed repairs to St. Mary’s steeple.
After the day was through Essie raced to attend the polka Mass at St. Mary’s. She didn’t have to look hard to find grandma, head bowed in prayer and holding down her normal spot in the front pew. The slow pace of the service was a welcome break to a hectic day.
On the way out of church, grandma veered right and ambled up the path to the back parking lot. Essie followed as they wound their way around to the grotto and that’s where she was introduced to Mary’s garden.
The intimate garden held a bright array of flowering plants, each marked with a small, white identification post that tied the plant to statues of Our Lady of Lourdes and St. Bernadette.
The healthy red Geraniums were “Gentle Virgins,” the wispy Baby’s Breath were “Our Lady’s Veil.”
The brilliant yellow Marigold were labeled “Mary’s gold” and the Black-eyed Susan were tagged “Golden Jerusalem.”
Rosemary Bush is Mary’s Tree, Primrose was Mary’s Candlestick, Canterbury Bells were named ‘Our Lady’s Nightcap.”
Veronica is Our Lady’s Faith, and the Snapdragon, Infant Jesus’s shoes.
Quite the little labyrinth behind the grotto in Barton.
