I-41 rehabilitation project to begin week of Oct. 7 in Washington County

October 3, 2019 – Washington Co., WI – It’ll cost $21.8 million to put median barriers in and resurface 22 miles of I41 from I41/US 45 split by Cabela’s to the Dodge County Line. Contractors will also replace two small bridge structures on I41 just north of State Highway 33.

Median cable project proposed for I-41 in Washington County

Contractor Payne and Dolan, Inc. is expected to begin the first stages of this project the week of October 7, and finish by mid-November 2019.

Work crews return next spring to complete the remaining work with an expected final completion date of fall 2020. This schedule is weather dependent and subject to change.

Project Improvements

  • Resurface 22 miles of I-41
  • Install median cable barrier within the project limits
  • Replace two smaller bridge structures along I-41 just north of WIS 33

The project comes after years of local advocacy for I-41 safety improvements from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Highway Department, and local advocates.

“We’ve felt that safety improvements here were a priority for years,” said Scott Schmidt, Washington County Highway Commissioner.  “The three crossover fatalities during the summer of 2018 on the stretch between Highway 144 and Highway 28 were really the last straw for us and we got aggressive.”

Following multiple accidents and deaths last summer, Commissioner Schmidt, the Sheriff’s Department and County Administration engaged Senator Duey Stroebel, Representative Rick Gundrum and the public.  Local leaders and organizations requested WisDOT take action on the stretch immediately. The Washington County Farm Bureau passed a resolution requesting action and many members of the public came to support the projects throughout the process.
