May 6, 2019 – West Bend, WI – Road work on Eighth Avenue from Walnut Street to Washington Street/STH 33 is set to begin Wednesday, May 8, 2019. There are quite a few neighbors who wonder what goes into the cost of fixing a stretch of road and how one segment is selected above another.
Below are the costs related to the Eighth Avenue reconstruction project in West Bend. The four-block stretch will cost $1.35 million and it’s expected to take five months to complete, weather permitting.
Please note, city engineer Max Maréchal is aware of the June 7-9 Festival of Angels. “Our designer Kunkel Engineering has been in constant communication with Holy Angels about the timing of Eighth Avenue reconstruction and the church activities that will overlap with the project’s time frame (end of school year, festival, summer school, beginning 2019-2020 school year).
The road will be closed to traffic until approximately late October for installation of underground utilities and street reconstruction.
Please note the project start date is weather dependent and may be delayed due to inclement weather.
The general contractor for this project is Wood Sewer & Excavating, Inc. from New London, Wisconsin.
There will also be a number of subcontractors working at various times during the project. Construction activities will include sanitary sewer installation, water main installation, storm sewer installation, roadway excavation, curb and gutter installation, curb ramp replacement, roadway reconstruction and restoration of disturbed areas.
Motorists are reminded to abide by all traffic control signs and devices as well as be aware of ongoing construction activities. Alternate routes should be planned to avoid construction whenever possible.
Holy Angels School principal Mike Sternig has emailed parents about the drop off and pickup plan moving forward.
Here’s the plan:
For morning drop-off, nothing really changes. However, Johnson buses will be dropping off students on Ninth Avenue instead of Eighth Avenue.
For afternoon pick-up, bus students will be boarding buses on the playground, just outside the Office Entrance. Buses will need to exit the playground using the north gate. Therefore, no cars will be able to wait at the driveway or north of the driveway. The buses will need that pathway to safely exit.
For those parents who normally pick up students on Eighth Avenue, I suggest using an alternate location such as the church parking lot. That would keep the normal “flow” of Ninth Avenue regulars unchanged.
I hope that this advanced notice will give you time to make any adjustments necessary for the efficient (and safe) dismissal of students at the end of the school day.
