Washington Co. Sheriff warns of scam involving ‘missed jury duty’

May 7, 2018 – Washington Co., WI – Recently other counties have experienced citizens being contacted by phone by a subject claiming to be an officer from a Sheriff’s Office. The subject claimed that the person being contacted missed jury duty and now has a warrant out for their arrest.

They are told to purchase prepaid money cards and asked personal information such as Social Security numbers, bank account numbers, etc.

Jury duty is handled exclusively by the Washington County Clerk of Circuit Court’s Office. If you are considered for jury duty, you will receive a questionnaire in the mail from the Clerk of Circuit Court to fill out. At the bottom of the questionnaire is an area to provide your mailing address, along with your cell phone and/or email address.

If you are selected for jury duty, you will receive a jury summons by mail. If you have chosen to receive emails or texts, you will receive information electronically to let you know when to report
for jury duty.

If you did not appear for jury duty, you will be contacted by the Washington County Clerk of Circuit Court’s Office.

You will never be informed by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office or any other law enforcement agency.

If you have received a phone call from someone claiming to be an officer stating you have missed jury duty and you owe money because of it, this is a scam and you should not talk to this person. You should contact the non-emergency Sheriff’s Office dispatch number of 262-335-4411 and report this incident as soon as possible.
