Feb. 13, 2017 – Fond du Lac, WI – High winds and warmer temperatures have made the ice on the southern part of Lake Winnebago unsafe.
Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Captain Ryan Waldschmidt said they got a call Sunday night from a man who believed his pickup was surrounded by open water and didn’t think it was safe to cross. The man was rescued by a homeowner on the lake who took a 4-wheeler out and brought him back to shore.
On social media fishing clubs reported other incidents where vehicles got stuck in the ice or were partially submerged, including a van near Wendt’s on the Lake restaurant. Water was half way up to the van’s doors. A towing company pulled it out.
Campbellsport Fire Department also dealt with a pickup truck that was pulling a shanty off Lake Bernice and broke through the ice about 30 to 40 feet off shore.
Waldschmidt said people going out on Lake Winnebago or coming off the ice should use landings on the eastern or western shores.
