Dec. 29, 2016 – Town of West Bend- A heavy aroma of smoke hung in the air Thursday morning as chickadees flitted amidst the debris of a home destroyed by fire.
Neighbor Janice Stauske said the flames were as high as the tree tops. She and her sister were evacuated at 11:15 p.m.
Stauske, a former principal at St. Frances Cabrini School, credited the Washington County Sheriffs and local firefighters for the help.
Mark and Julius Helmle were rescued by a Sheriffs deputy and West Bend Police Officer Lee Goodman.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
