October 4, 2024 – Washington Co., WI – Dear Washington County Insider;
Should only U.S. citizens be allowed to vote in Wisconsin state or local elections? That is what the referendum on the November 5 ballot is all about.
As Americans, we cherish our freedoms…from the freedoms of religion and speech to the freedoms of assembly and the right to petition our government.
None of our freedoms is more fundamental than the right as citizens to vote, but some Americans think non-citizens should also be able to exercise that right without becoming a citizen.
While non-citizens are prohibited from voting in federal elections, a growing number of cities around the country are authorizing non-citizens to vote in local elections, including in our nation’s capital, Washington, D.C.
The State of Wisconsin Eligibility to Vote Referendum located on the back of the November 5 ballot asks what boils down to a simple question:
Should only U.S. citizens be allowed to vote in Wisconsin state and local elections?
I urge all Wisconsinites to vote “YES,” and preserve the precious right to vote for citizens.
