Growing plants should be fun | By Gus Witte

West Bend, WI – Witte’s Vegetable Market , LLC, 2313 Hwy NN, West Bend, WI, is open for the season. Owner Gus Witte shares some insight and advice about growing your own plants.
The other week I spoke to a class of young farmers about work-life balance while farming. When I told my wife Tiffany about it she laughed and said, “What balance.” She isn’t wrong and what I tried to convey to these young men and women is something my dad has told me for years, which is ‘If you take care of the farm, the farm will take care of you.’

Last week I worked extra. I prepped land ahead of time knowing if we got rain Saturday, which we did, no way would the sprouts have made it.
I stayed late Monday making sure the next seedings of spinach and carrots made it in the ground; in fact, Mom finally kicked me out around 7:30 p.m. after she saw my truck was still there.
Please don’t feel bad; all that extra work paid off with a rain day spent with Tiffany at home. We are even getting the slip and slide out for the boys after school today. Brrrr…their choice, not ours.
So, I say this to remind all of you who will partake in our veggie plants sale this weekend and this coming week: Take care of your gardens. Find a system that works for your schedule.
Growing plants should be fun and not a burden. I started this sale as a way to share my passion with more people. If you heed this advice I promise the tomatoes will taste better.
