VIDEO | Jordan Stolz of Kewaskum, WI preps for World Cup event in Poland

Kewaskum, WI – Jordan Stolz, 19, of Kewaskum just won the prestigious Oscar Mathisen Award as the best skater in the world and this coming weekend he is slipping into his red, white, and blue to try and knock down more records as he skates the World Cup competition in Poland. In a tribute to Stolz’s success we hear from the community that supported him during his last World Cup championship performance.

Stolz will compete Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Races to watch include the 500m, 1000m, and 1500m. Stolz may also compete in the 5000m, however that has not yet been confirmed.

The races will be broadcast live on YouTube at International Skating Union page.

After winning gold in the 1500-meter, Stolz took his place atop the podium and was later presented the statue by 2015 Oscar Mathisen Award winner Brittany Bowe.

“This is like Super Bowl MVP or Oscar,” said coach Bob Corby.  “Only 3 Americans have won it, Eric Heiden, Bonnie Blair, and Brittany Bowe.”

  • Stolz is the 50th winner in the 65-year-long history of the Oscar Trophy.
  • Stolz is the second youngest skater to win the award.
  • Fellow American Eric Heiden was one month younger and had won the World Championships All-round in Heerenveen when in 1977 he received the Oscar Trophy for the first time.
  • In total, the trophy has been awarded to American skaters 10 times, as Eric Heiden won it four times in a row 1977-1980, and Shani Davis twice, in 2005 and 2009. Bonnie Blair of the US was the first female skater to win the Oscar Trophy, in 1992, while Chad Hedrick won in 2004 and Brittany Bowe in 2015.
  • Skating legend Oscar Mathisen was 19 years old when he won his first World Championship title in 1908.

Below is the story of Stolz’s 1500-meter win in Norway on Sunday, December 3, 2023.
Kewaskum, WI – The Fastest Man on Ice from Kewaskum, Wi is in action this weekend as Jordan Stolz skates the World Cup in Stavanger (NOR). The 19-year-old competed Friday, Saturday, and Sunday December 1-3 as part of Team USA.

Stolz looked strong in the 1500 meter vs. Bart Swings of Belgium. In the final lap, where most skaters are gassed, Stolz turned on the jets and finished with a time of 1:44.67 and a new track record.

“He is only 19 and is still improving because he is a phenomenal athlete,” said coach Bob Corby.

Stolz also took first place in other ISU World Cup Speed Skating events including the 500 meter and 1000 meter.

Interesting to note how fast Stolz was since taking last week off from the competition in Beijing.

During the awards ceremony Stolz was presented with a 1st place gold medal, a cheese cutter tied with a red ribbon and a diploma for setting the new track record.

While in Norway, Stolz also participated with children in World Ice Skating Day.

Stolz is an advocate of skating and trying to grow the sport by encouraging families to get their kids involved. In 2022 he and fellow Olympic speed skater Erin Jackson hosted a Skate with an Olympian event at the Pettit National Ice Center.
