Funeral arrangements for West Bend man, 50, killed in neighboring Fond du Lac County, WI

November 21, 2023 – Fond du Lac Co., WI – Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed the name of the man killed in an accident Friday, November 17, 2023, at a stone company in Eden.

Below are the funeral details.

Modesto Montes, 50, passed away on November 17, 2023. He was a beloved father, son, brother, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Modesto was born on November 2, 1973 in Eden, WI where he spent his formative years. He graduated from Campbellsport High School in 1991. He continued his education in mechanics, maintenance and hydraulics. His first job was working with our father at Montes and Son Small Engine Repair. Mo then worked at Pennzoil, the Est corporation/Pace Industries, and Eden Stone. Throughout his career, he was known for his hard work and dedication.

But more than anything, Modesto was a devoted father. He loved spending time with his daughter, Tori and their cat, Kitty. He enjoyed going out to eat, playing on his phone, and watching their favorite movies. Mo was a wonderful, caring person who was loved by many. He would help anyone in need and could fix anything. Mo had an extensive collection of DVDs, CDs, knives, and lots and lots of tools to name a few. He was big hearted and loved buying gifts for others. At the end of his life, he gave the ultimate gift of tissue donation.

In his free time, Modesto enjoyed music, especially heavy metal. He had the biggest heavy metal collection which he was always eager to share his knowledge and enthusiasm with others. Mo loved playing music trivia but quizzing us in his style.

Modesto is survived by his loving daughter, Victoria Montes, his mother Maria Montes, his sisters Maria (Todd) Rodenkirch, Paula (Miguel) Hernandez, Juana (Florencio Hernandez) Montes, Teresa (Jose) Villarreal, Raquel Jasso, Carmen Montes and numerous nephews and nieces, aunts, uncles and cousins and his long time friend Melissa Knueppel. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his father, Jose T. Montes.

Family and friends are invited to attend the funeral visitation to be held at Zacherl Funeral Home at 875 E. Division St, Fond du Lac, WI 54935 on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The visitation will continue Thursday, November 30 at 10 a.m. with Mass at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Church, 271 Fourth St Way, Fond du Lac, WI 54937. The service will be officiated by Rev. Ryan Pruess.

The family thanks the Campbellsport First Responders, Fond du lac Fire Department and Paramedics, Fond du Lac Sheriff Department including Pastor Josh Ramirez.

A special thanks to the employees of Eden Stone who were at his side until the end.

November 19, 2023 – Fond du Lac Co., Wi – A West Bend man, 50, was killed in an accident at Eden Stone in Fond du Lac County, WI; his name is expected to be released Monday, November 20, 2023 according to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s office.

According to Fond du Lac County Sheriff Sergeant Andrew Kohlmann the Fond du Lac County Communication Center received a 911 call of a male who was pinned under equipment that had fell at the Eden Stone Company, N4500 CTH V in the Township of Eden.

The call came in Friday November 17, 2023, at 3:57 p.m.

Staff at Eden Stone had started CPR and were able to direct other first responders to the scene of the accident.

When deputies arrived, the male was pulseless and non-breathing. Deputies and fire personal attempted life saving measures, but their efforts were unsuccessful. The 50-year-old male from West Bend was pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident.

Initial investigation shows that employees were unloading a large steel piece of a new stone saw from a semi-truck. The piece of steel became unstable and tipped over on its side trapping the victim.

Employees were quickly able to free the victim from being trapped within seconds of the accident. There were no other injuries as a result from the incident. The victim of the incident was an employee at Eden Stone.

Assisting at the scene was Eden Fire Department/First Responders, City of Fond du Lac Ambulance, and Campbellsport Ambulance.

No further information is being released at this time. This incident remains under investigation by the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office. The name of the victim is being withheld until next of kin are notified. Foul play is not suspected.
