West Bend, WI – Gus Witte and his family own Witte Vegetable Market, 2313 County Hwy NN, in West Bend, WI. The family, and the generation before, are committed to putting food on the table for neighbors in the area. Below is an article about the love of farming by Gus Witte.
I was asked why I do this. To be honest that is the nice way of putting it. The real questions I was asked made me go, “um none of your business.”

So why? Everyone thinks it is the money. I am here to tell you everyone needs to live and pay their bills, but there isn’t enough money in the world to do what I do. Probably a good reason why there are only less than 1% of us farmers left in the entire population. The work to money ratio just never equals out at the end of the day.
The honest to God truth of why I do this is I’m blessed. I wake up every day knowing I am going to do something great today.
I don’t have a job; I have a life. A life in which my “work” is woven into every fiber of my being.
My body is broken many a day, but the inner voice always encourages me to keep going. It’s not always roses and sunshine, but I literally will be farming till the day I die.
On a side note: Corn train coming through. One of the best parts of my day is when the boys come and help me. Tiffany and I aren’t immune to the lure the screen is to today’s youth and parents. However, we are trying to find a healthy balance between keeping two 5-year-old boys safe on a working farm and allowing them to adventure and play like little boys should. I hope this short video puts a smile on your face.
