VIDEO | 2023 Washington County Fair Jr. Livestock Auction exceeds 2022 total

Washington Co., WI – Some happy 4-H and FFA members went home from the 2023 Junior Livestock Auction at the Washington County Fair on Thursday night as they realized their hard work paid off.  The total gross of 126 animals in the Jr. Livestock sale was $473,987, which topped the 2022 sale amount by $35,435. At the end of the evening a good old-fashioned bidding war broke out on a 290-pound hog owned by Tierney Herman.

The auction is a showcase for youth who participate in the beef, sheep, and swine projects through 4-H and FFA in Washington County, WI.

Some highlights from the 2023 Jr. Livestock Auction…

Zach and Matt Oelhafen pulled in strong bids on Thursday night. Zach’s Overall Reserve Champion Dairy Steer weighed in at 1,470 pounds and secured a winning bid of $6.50 a pound from Dynamic Tool.

Matt’s Overall Grand Champion Dairy Steer weighed in at 1,485 pounds and took home a winning bid of $7.50 a pound from LS Landscape.

Tyler Rabuck, 13, from Kewaskum who wrote an article about how his steer used more hair products than his mom, found that moisturizing butter and hair conditioner paid off as he secured $5.75 a pound for his 1,280-pound steer thanks to Bunzel Meat Market.

The 2023 hog sale pulled in some strong bids as 50 animals averaged $8.11 a pound for a grand total of $107,816.50 on the night.

The 2023 sheep sale saw prices topped $25 a pound. Ally Loosen from Slinger FFA pulled in $9 a pound for her 141-pound lamb from Gehrings Meat Market.

The final 2023 total gross of 126 animals in the Jr. Livestock sale was $473,987.

The final 2022 total on the night in sales for the Jr. Livestock Sale was $438,552.75.
