Washington Co., Wi – Weather can certainly make farming a challenge. Just last week at Witte’s Vegetable Market on CTH NN in West Bend, WI, we received an inch of hail and a few inches of rain. While most of you affected were probably looking at roofs or window screens, we were concerned about our early seedings and our winter spinach.
It took a few days to dry out to the point where we could walk the fields and survey the outcome. The story that was told was two-fold.
The planted seeds, while compacted from the pounding rains, will be okay in the ground.

Most had started to germinate and over the course of time will work their way to the surface and emerge happy with no recall of the weather event. However, the winter spinach wasn’t so lucky.
These little guys were planted last Fall and had just started their new Spring growth when the storm hit. From afar they looked healthy, but a closer peek told us a different story.
Unfortunately, they have been left unsellable. Their leaves ripped and torn by the tiny pea-sized hail. While I’m bummed, we won’t have early spinach, I am so grateful the early seedings were successful. In farming, we will always have successes and failures.
