The Captain John B. Mason Veteran Peer Outreach Program is designed to
connect veterans with physical and mental healthcare, primarily through the Veterans
Administration along with other sources. These goals are accomplished through
veteran peers. These peers will help with connecting the veteran to the VA and other
resources to live a healthy and productive life.
The Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative (MHVI) is located in West Allis. It is
run by veterans with a mission to help homeless and at-risk veterans to obtain and stay
at a high level of independence. The MHVI is not limited to only Milwaukee County. Their
goal is to fill gaps not covered by other organizations.
MHVI is very involved with Community Education and Outreach Program to reach
the public and organizations about their mission and integrate with veterans in need. A
major purpose of MHVI is to help veterans of all backgrounds meet their basic needs.
They have clothing, furniture, food, and many other items to help those in a crisis state.
The fourth agency the Fohl-Martin Allenton American Legion Post 483 committee met with was represented by Jennifer Kiefer from Fischer House-Wisconsin located at the Milwaukee Veterans Administration Medical Center. The mission is to provide “a home away from home for military and veterans/ families” when a loved one, active military or veteran, is being hospitalized for an illness, disease, or injury. The only stipulation is they live more than 50 miles away to be able to stay free of charge with awesome bedrooms, the use of a kitchen, laundry, Wi-Fi, TVs, and much more.
In addition, the Fohl-Martin Allenton American Legion Post 483 donated money to Stars and Stripes Honor Flights to help get area veterans to partake in “their special day.”
The American Legion is founded on four pillars, one of which is “Veterans.” Members of the American Legion are dedicated to assisting veterans when they are discharged from military service. This help comes in many ways, some of which include support of help for homeless veterans, support with basic needs programs for those in a life crisis, and support for those coping with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury.
It is with this pillar in mind, the Allenton Wreaths Across America Committee
dedicated money for support to help those helping our veterans and their families.
