November 15, 2021 – Kewaskum, WI – The Village of Kewaskum board voted 5 – 1 to approve trustee Dave Spenner as the new Village President. Trustee Nate Wendelborn was the only dissenting vote.

Spenner was the only candidate nominated for the post.

President Kevin Scheunemann, who was not in attendance at Monday’s meeting, announced October 26, 2021 he was stepping down as Village President on January 1, 2022.

Scheunemann said it was a difficult decision. “I didn’t want to resign but the reality is I have five kids going to four different schools with a lot of activities and I have a lot of family issues to pay attention to in terms of sporting events and charity events,” he said. “We’re working on building a new church at St. Lucas and I’m on the leadership team and eventually I just had to step down and focus on the charitable work and that’s my first concern.”

Scheunemann submitted his letter of resignation October 26, 2021. Scheunemann had spent the past seven years as Village President. He was elected to his last term in April 2021.

Kewaskum Village Board

Following the nomination, Dave Spenner was unanimously appointed Village President as Chairperson Pro-Tem.

“I’m interested in the position, the things important to me are growth opportunities,” he said.

Spenner has lived in the community 10 years after relocating from Racine. He’s spent about eight years on the Kewaskum Village Board, serving on the Park and Rec committee and the Library Board.

Spenner was initially elected to the Village Board when Andy Pesch was Village President.

“I’ve advocated for growth in the parks. I’ve advocated for growth in the library. I’m on the Library Board as a trustee representative, I’m also a fiscal conservative,” said Spenner. “I like to be careful about our spending and our borrowing.”

With Spenner approved as Village President Pro-Tem, that opens a spot on the board for a Village Trustee.

This spring Trustees Richard Laubach, Richard Knoebel, and Nate Wendelborn are up for election in April 2022.  The Board discussed the fourth place finisher will fill the open seat as Village Trustee.

Candidates can begin circulating nomination papers December 1, 2021. Paperwork is due January 4, 2022.
