August 20, 2021 – Germantown, WI – In what could be a WIAA Division 1 Football State championship game come mid-November, the Germantown Warhawks and the Homestead Highlanders square off in the first of many “Friday Night Lights” matchups.
Both teams had very successful 2020 seasons, with Germantown going 6-3 (5-2 in conference) and winning its sectional final game against Cedarburg 31-6.
Homestead finished 4-5 (3-4 in conference), falling to Hamilton 35-13 in its sectional final match.
The last time these two teams met was in the 2019 playoffs; the Highlanders won 10-7.
Both teams have are returning their starting quarterbacks.
For Homestead, senior Ryan Quinn, who shared the starting role with 2021 grad Jack Wirthlin will take full command this season.
Germantown will have junior Henry Kelley at the helm. In 2020, Quinn threw for 330 yards and 2 touchdowns, while also rushing for 116 yards and 2 more touchdowns.
Kelley threw for 745 yards and 9 touchdowns while rushing for 115 yards and 4 rushing touchdowns in 2020.
Running back will the far more interesting position battle between the two teams, as Homestead will be led by returning senior Joseph Ollman who had monstrous 2020, running 196 times, gaining 1084 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns.
Germantown will be have two seniors from last year’s team, Ethan Sawyer (766 rushing yards, 6 touchdowns) and Tony Loberger (635 rushing yards, 5 touchdowns).
New senior Aaron Grant, who had 235 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns in 2020 will have to take up a much larger role this season for Germantown to maintain its offensive production.
Both teams also emphasize strong defense that work hard on forcing turnovers, nearly even in forced fumbles, interceptions and sacks.
Homestead will host Germantown on Friday with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
