May 19, 2021 – Washington Co., Wi – It was Wednesday, May 12, 2021 when the Washington County Board voted 22 – 4 on an amended resolution to make safety improvements to CTH S at STH 175 and STH 83 and leave an extension of CTH W off the table.

There was an indication County Executive Josh Schoemann would issue a decision on the resolution Monday, May 17.

In unchartered territory as an elected county executive (instead of a hired county administrator) it now appears Schoemann may have until a week before the next county board meeting before he determines whether to veto the decision or let the vote stand.

According to the county website, the next County Board meeting would be June 9, 2021 at 6 p.m. The agenda would have to be set by June 2, 2021.

On Tuesday afternoon, May 18, Schoemann issued the following statement.

“We’re evaluating the result from the unanticipated combination of amendments from last week’s County Board actions,” said County Supervisor Schoemann. “Decisions will be forthcoming as we work through the implications.”

A couple bullet points on the background of the issue:

-A letter was written to Schoemann last week encouraging him to veto the super-majority vote.

-Farm families packed the gallery and overflow room at the County Courthouse when the issue was discussed by the full County Board. Farm families are against the CTH W extension which would run a new road through three working century farms. That road would save six to 16-seconds on a commute and add two more stop signs. -This is the third time the issue of improvements to CTH S, STH 175 and 83 has come before the County Board.

-A request has been made to the County for a copy of the amended resolution. That information will be posted when details are available.

-The proposed extension of CTH W would run through the northern section of the Gehring Farm, a seventh-generation farm on STH 83.

-If the county executive issues a veto at the next meeting it would be during the month of June which has been designated “Dairy Month” is Wisconsin.
