February 2, 2021 – Washington County, WI – Keep those boots, gloves and hot cocoa ingredients handy. Punxsutawney Phil says winter is here to stay for another six weeks.
According to tradition, if a groundhog comes out of its hole on this day and sees its shadow, it gets scared and runs back into its burrow, predicting six more weeks of winter weather; no shadow means an early spring.
According to Fox6news.com:
“There will be six more weeks of winter Punxsutawney Phil predicted as he emerged from his burrow on a snowy Tuesday morning to perform his Groundhog Day duties.”
The Groundhog Day tradition dates back to 1887 where it was celebrated for the first time at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, PA.
