West Bend, WI – It was a sunny day with chilly temps in the teens, but that didn’t stop about 50 people from attending the 7th birthday celebration for a pair of Syrian brown bears Lewis and Clark.
What do you get a pair of 800-pound bears for their birthday? Well, two of everything seemed to be the strategy.
Two Spiderman body pillows, two basketballs, two sleds full of luscious fruit treats, marshmallows, and a pair of cakes decorated as mirror images of the bear’s face.
The treat that went over the best were two Popsicles made in 5-gallon pails. The base was a mix of elderberries, blueberries, and cherries. While tasty, both Lewis and Clark spent much of the afternoon rolling around in the juicy goodness. After they were done someone in the crowd labeled it “the elderberry massacre.”
David and Lana Fechter, owners of Shalom Wildlife Sanctuary, were also extremely generous and treated everyone to free bear cupcakes. Like good parents they knew the boys wouldn’t share their birthday cakes.
