September 14, 2020 – Washington Co., WI – It is with heavy hearts that we announce retired Washington Co. Sheriff’s Office Drug Detection Canine “Gunner” (retired May 2019) passed away peacefully this morning surrounded by his loving family.
Canine Gunner joined the Washington Co. Sheriff’s Office in October 2009 and was paired with Detective Christopher Killey as his handler. Canine Gunner retired from law enforcement service in May 2019 to live out the rest of his days with Detective Killey and family. Gunner and Detective Killey were an accomplished canine team responsible for countless drug seizures and numerous felony criminal arrests. Gunner was a familiar presence at various civic organizations and children’s events where he enjoyed receiving playful pets during meet/greet opportunities.
While the Washington Co Sheriff’s Office canine program is funded through the annual budget process, it could not be the success that it is without the support we receive from the community.
A special thanks to the staff at West Bend Animal Hospital (West Bend), Lakeshore Veterinary Specialists (Port Washington), and Zoetis Pharmaceutical (NJ) for their loving care and dedication to Gunner’s health over his entire tenure. We also extend our thanks and appreciation to the corporate food sponsorship of Fromm Family Foods (Cedarburg) and Purina/Nestle (Neenah).
Sheriff Martin Schulteis also wanted to publically thank Detective Christopher Killey and Gunner for the years of dedicated service to the citizens of Washington County and for the lasting legacy left at our agency. The Sheriff stated, “Washington County is a better place due to the level of dedication and commitment they both demonstrated during their special partnership. Gunner will be missed greatly.”
