Today is Peace Officer’s Memorial Day and according to Gov. Scott Walker all U.S. flags will fly at half staff as a mark of respect for peace officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
There will be several local tributes this week. On Monday, May 16 there will be a dedication of the “Soaring Eagle” sculpture at 5 p.m. outside the West Bend Police Department. The project was a collaboration between the WBPD, West Bend Friends of Sculpture, City of West Bend and sculptor Jeremy Wolf.
On Thursday, May 19 at 7 p.m. the annual Washington County Law Enforcement Memorial Service will get underway in the Ziegler building at the Washington County Fair Park.
This years host agency is the Kewaskum Police Department.
On a history note: On October 1, 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officer’s Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls as Police Week.
