5-acres of marsh burned in Fond du Lac Co. | By FDL Sheriff

March 16, 2025 – Fond du Lac Co., WI – On Saturday, March 15, 2024, at 11:43 a.m., the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a 911 call from the property owner at W409 County Highway CCC in the Town of Marshfield.

The caller reported that a previously controlled fire had become out of control and that approximately 1 acre of marshland was on fire. Due to the heavy winds the fire continued to spread quickly.

Deputies with the Fond du Lac County Sheriffs Office along with Fire Personnel from Mt Calvary Fire Department, St Cloud Fire Department, Calumet Fire Department, St Anna Fire Department, Kiel Fire & Rescue, Elkhart Lake Fire Department, Plymouth Fire Department, Greenbush Fire Department, New Holstein Fire Department, Campbellsport Fire Department and Glenbeulah Fire Department were all called to the scene. Fire crews worked to stop the fire from spreading to nearby tree lines, eventually containing it to only the marsh land.

The investigation revealed that the property owners at W409 CTH CCC had been burning garbage in a burn barrel earlier in the day. They believed the fire had been fully extinguished, but it accidentally spread to the marsh. The fire is not considered suspicious.

Approximately 5 acres of marsh lands were consumed from the fire. No injuries were reported and no structures were damaged.

CTH CCC between CTH G and Hillview Road were shut down for approximately 2 hours while crews worked on scene.
