36th Annual X Blue Chip: Invited Stars Shine, Nobody Catches Chap | By Owen Bailey-Waltz

Petersen and Holland (I-25) recovered from a rough start to win the final race, and the Blue Chip regatta.

August 16, 2017 – Big Cedar Lake, WI – This past weekend, Big Cedar Lake hosted some of the best youth sailors the Inland Lakes have to offer, in the 2017 X Blue Chip.

Thirty boats from 11 lakes competed in the regatta, including four boats from Big Cedar.

Competitors were invited to sail in the regatta based on performance during the regular season. Chapman Petersen and Caroline Holland (I-25) came in as the defending champions, winners of last year’s Blue Chip.

Five races were held and following three straight race wins on the second day, Petersen decisively won the regatta with a total of 17 points.

Blue Chip competition is usually tight, showcased here as Meredith Kent and Addie Vaupel (A-15) jostle for downwind position.

He joins an elite club as one of only five skippers to win the Blue Chip multiple times, all of whom won the regatta in back-to-back years, and the only skipper to win back-to-back Blue Chips before turning 14 years of age.

Other boats in the top five include #2 [D-30] Nathan and Graham Hetzler of Delavan (33pts – won tiebreaker), #3 [W-20] Owen Harrod and Hank Seum of White Bear (33pts – lost tiebreaker), #4 [V-88] Sam Spencer and Austin Steiner of Pewaukee (35pts – won tiebreaker), and #5 [J-2] Jack Scherer and Jacob Bowman of Oshkosh (35pts – lost tiebreaker).

The highest-finishing boat from Cedar was [A-136] Abby Eckert and Allison Heimsch, finishing in 10th with 59 points.
