I really wish state government would integrate park stickers into front license plates. I really hate having to deal with the windshield decals every year, especially in winter. Combining it with the front plate also has other advantages: This fee could be collected by the DOT automatically when you renew your registration. In all likelihood, this integration would boost annual admission pass sales since it would be integrated into the plate registration and not require a separate positive action to collect.
I get that in theory, the window sticker makes it easier to check when driving up to a manned check-in point. Yet, those check points are rarely manned these days and if you have a sticker, you’re often driving through the far lane where they can’t really see it, anyway. So any argument there begins to fall flat.
As for sticker theft, have you even seen other DNR stickers? They’re designed to be next to impossible to remove without destroying them (including their window decals). If there’s real concern, then consider embossing the plates as is done with the plate letters. The park rangers really should be able to be able to check registration with just the plate numbers anyway. A small database table with the active annual registrations (just the plate, make, model and color…nothing else) would easily fit in any smartphone memory.
