June 19, 2024 – West Bend, WI – The staff at the Habitat Restore on N. Main Street in West Bend, WI could feel something was wrong… like they were being watched.
Clerks at the counter would watch the front door slide open and nobody would be there.

Then the front door would slide open again… and a young raccoon would nonchalantly walk by and look inside.
Just a browsing kind of walk …something you do at the grocery when you really want something but forgot the coupons at home.
It was a hot day and just a breath of cool air escaped the resale shop and could be felt on the front stoop.
Then clerks watched as the door slid open again and another raccoon walked past. Now there were two; a thief and a lookout… but they were “super cute” according to Christine the clerk.
It was a little bit of a harmless Mayberryesque scenario that channeled a hint of Ranger Rick Magazine.
Staff got a little concerned the visitors would try to come in and shop or nest, so they called the community services officer.
“She was good,” said Christine, about Abigail the CSO. “It did turn out to be her first time trying to snare a couple raccoons though.”
According to Christine there were some high-pitched screams. From the raccoons too.
Eventually the animals were boxed up and taken out of town.
The staff had an exciting-day-at-work story to relay when they got home.
On a history note: Do you remember Ranger Rick Magazine? That was before you discovered Dynamite and Bananas – remember those in 7th and 8th grade?
