Feb. 23, 2017 – West Bend, WI – West Bend East freshman Cayden Henschel and senior Manny Garrison have been working hard during practice to prepare for this week’s WIAA State wrestling tournament.
Henschel and Garrison have both qualified for the first time. This past week the student athletes reflected on their goals and tried to keep things in perspective as they stayed focused on the match ahead.
Henschel is staying motivated to wrestle because he would like to “be a state champ someday” and Garrison said he “enjoys the sport” and this accomplishment is “a great way to end senior year.”
East Suns head coach Brent Henschel said he was proud of Garrison who bounced back from injury and stayed focused even thought he had a lot on his plate with academics.
“Manny had shoulder surgery in the off season and battled through injuries and discomfort this year,” he said. “Not to mention his academic goals and Harvard application process; Manny has dealt with a lot so to see him reach his goal to make it to state makes me very happy.”
As far as Cayden Henschel was concerned coach Henschel said the freshman has paid his dues.
“Cayden has wrestled year-round for several years now and really put the time and extra work in to be a very successful wrestler even as a freshman,” he said.
“The club wrestling, international style wrestling and the disciplined weight-training program put him in a position to have a great freshman campaign. I was proud to see all that work pay off.”
Wrestling starts Thursday, Feb. 23 and runs through Saturday, Feb. 25.
