Replacement of Kohlsville River Bridges along I-41 to resume Monday, Feb. 27

Feb. 22, 2017 – Kohlsville, WI – Beginning Monday, February 27, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is scheduled to resume work on the reconstruction of the new bridges along I-41, over the Kohlsville River, in Washington County.

Last year, initial work involved partial bridge construction and temporary pavement widening of I-41 to prepare for temporarily splitting traffic and utilizing a median crossover. That traffic split is now going into effect for both lanes of I-41 southbound. To maximize traffic flow in the area, both lanes of I-41 southbound will be open to traffic with one lane crossing over to the northbound roadway and the other remaining on the southbound roadway. This traffic split is scheduled to handle traffic in its final configuration on Wednesday, March 1.

To allow for the new lane configuration, the I-41 southbound exit ramp to County D will be temporarily closed for the day on Wednesday, March 1. Once the ramp closure is lifted, those looking to access the County D exit ramp from I-41 southbound should stay in the right lane. Please note that both lanes heading northbound will still be open to traffic.

This traffic pattern will be in place from late February to late June, 2017.

To implement this traffic pattern safely, work zone speeds will be adjusted to 55mph. Wisconsin State Patrol will be enforcing these speeds in the area.

These tips can help you get in and out of a work zone safely:

  • Don’t fool around. Eliminate distractions like eating, drinking, talking on the phone, or fiddling with electronic devices.
  • Give yourself room. Rear-end collisions are the most common work zone crashes, so don’t tailgate.
  • Be patient. If you don’t see workers, that doesn’t mean they’re not there. Observe the signs until you see one that says you’ve left the work zone.
  • Follow the law. Slow down and move over, if possible, when you see flashing lights.
